About Me
About Michael
I am a clinical psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist and I like to work in a collaborative relationship with my patients as opposed to a top-down directive approach. I believe we co-create our relationships and I aim to help people know themselves more fully and live life more freely on their terms. I have an interest in working with people from all walks of life and consider myself a generalist.
Following my post-graduate training I undertook a three year core training to become qualified in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) through the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA). I continue to train, receive supervision and undertake my own therapy using this approach. I have previously undertaken training in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy (PAT) Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Hakomi Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy.
I have worked in health for 17 years and currently work with the Department of Veteran Affairs and NSW Fire and Rescue. I studied psychology as a mature age student and previously worked in government, hospitality, as a FIFO miner and as a Myotherapist for ten years – where I had diverse interests; working both in the education and treatment of persistent pain and with elite athletes (at a professional and Olympic level).
My areas of research in psychology were focused on Men’s Health – exploring men’s expectations of psychological therapy, and Eco-Psychology – utilising Forest Therapy as a complementary intervention (alongside psychotherapy) for patients with complex presentations in a rural area.
Personally, I am fascinated by transpersonal psychology (integrative psychology that explores the unconscious and human growth/transformation), spending time in nature and reading fiction and non-fiction that explores the human experience.
